Super Cup 2015 prediction preview

, , No Comments
The Super cup is UEFA's season campaign opener which pits together winners of the Champions league against Europa league winners. This season is an all Spanish affair with both team hoping to kick start their European campaign to a great start.
European football’s annual curtain raiser takes center stage Tuesday, as Champions League winners Barcelona take on Europa League champions Sevilla for the UEFA Super Cup.
Although underdogs, Sevilla will be looking to lay the 2014 Super Cup ghost to rest, having been defeated 2-0 by Real Madrid the last time around.
Barcelona may have something to say about that, though, and with manager Luis Enrique’s star-studded side seemingly entering a golden era, confidence will be sky-high.

An infamous History

If history is anything to go by then Barcelona are in for one as their last Super Cup match wans't an affair they'd like to remember anytime soon.
The last time the two teams met in the UEFA Super Cup, the final score was embarrassingly one-sided and not in Barcelona's favour. Sevilla dismantled their compatriots in Monaco back in 2006. Renato opened the scoring early on, Freddie Kanoute doubled the lead, then Enzo Maresca sealed the deal with a penalty, won after the late Antonio Puerta took no less a defender than Carles Puyol to the cleaners.
Possibly the best squad in the history of the club, that Super Cup-winning Sevilla side was one of immense quality driven on by a once-in-a-generation player in the form of Dani Alves (who will line up against them on Tuesday).

Barcelona's talent

Barcelona will be looking to maintain their status as the best in the world by displaying excellent teamwork backed up with their formidable trio. Many teams lay fallen with managers puzzled about how to stop the Catalan's trio from working their magic.

Barcelona were the best team in the world in the 2014/15 campaign—you don’t have to be a genius to work that one out.
Everything just worked for Enrique and Co., with the three-pronged attacking line of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar proving to be one of the most dangerous strike forces that football has ever seen.
The likes of Ivan Rakitic, former Sevilla captain, is also a person of interest in the match. The Serbian international is resilient and has some outstanding strikes that could prove decisive in the match . He also offers power and energy to the team both off and on the ball not to mention his mastership with Iniesta and Busquests.
Their most recent friendly against Roma at the Camp Nou, though, featured vintage Barca.
Enrique’s men totally outplayed the Italian side, with Neymar, Messi and the ever-impressive Ivan Rakitic getting on the scoresheet.

Player to watch: Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Ivan Rakitic

Sevilla's Resilience

Sevilla had a good European season and they are motivated to keep up this positivity. However, the loss of Caros Bacca is a huge blow to the Sevilla side as he was instrumental in their success. The side is also a new so to speak as many of the Sevilla players lost during the summer transfer market have been replaced. This will offer the Catalans a new challenge as they have not met before with this present squad.
Perhaps the biggest challenge for Barcelona could be coping with wide man Yevhen Konoplyanka. With quick feet, a wicked shot from distance and the placement to go with it, he will start on the left flank, cutting inside -- an ideal position from which to exploit his main strengths. If Ivan Rakitic allows his concentration to slip and doesn't provide adequate help for Alves on Barca's right, Konoplyanka, who thrives on big games, can punish them for it.

Players to watch: Yevhen Konoplyanka, Dnipro

Prediction

Barcelona 2- Sevilla 0
Sevilla will put up a good fight against Barcelona for the cup but it won't be enough to match Barcelona's talent. It will be hard for Sevilla to make a repeat of the Monaco 2006 affair. Barcelona are petering on the edge of football immortality, and they’ll be determined not to fail their mission to win every conceivable title at the first hurdle. should Enrique get his tactics right and his three amigos up front continue their stunning form, Barca will be adding yet more silverware to their trophy cabinet.
